Accommodations in Mikumi Village
Mikumi village
has plenty of
basic guest houses, most of them pretty tawdry
affairs with attached
restaurants, bars, and prostitutes servicing the
carnal desires of truckers and safari drivers (the
Tanzam Highway is dubbed the "AIDS Highway").
Luckily, there are a handful of more appetizing
options. Camping is possible at
Mikumi Genesis Motel
and Tan
Swiss Lodge.
Internet Bar &
Guest House 3km east of the junction . Best of a
trio of basic guest houses in this area, with
reasonably priced rooms sharing bathrooms, slightly
overpriced en-suite options, and decent local food
(try anything with cassava leaves)
Hotels and Guest House available at Mikumi village.
Kilimanjaro Village Inn 1km east of the
junction (no phone). Set in attractive gardens, this
has en-suite rooms with fans and nets.
Mikumi Genesis Motel
or so called
Snake Park Lodge is 4km east
of the
junction of the park. Exploits its popularity with
tourists by charging high rates, though the rooms
themselves – two per cottage – are pleasant, with
big beds and nets, and have clean bathrooms. Its bar
is a good place to meet fellow travelers, and the
restaurant serves big portions of good food. There's
also a rather miserable snake park.
Tan-Swiss Lodge 5km east of the
junction, Run by a Swiss couple, this has an affordable
restaurant, including lobster when in season, fish,
grills, pasta and pizza, and some times Indian and
Chinese. There's also Mikumi's best bar (cocktails
and South African wines), and half a dozen charming
en-suite rooms at the back with digital TV and
private terraces facing a garden. Camping at the
garden is allowed.
