Plantation Lodge Visit to a coffee plantation Ngorongoro Accommodation

Plantation Lodge is located in the Karatu area of northern Tanzania.

This high-end German owned guest farm is located on a prominent hilltop just north of the town of Karatu itself.

Although the farmland around the lodge is rather open, the tropical gardens which surround the lodge are absolutely stunning and include a very nice pool.

The main building is reminiscent of a rather posh modern African home, chic and personable. Rooms come in various shapes and sizes, both attached to the central building and ranged around the gardens.

Plantation Lodge is a pretty slick operation, comfortable and high-end. A very nice place indeed to overnight, possibly to stay longer and use as a base to explore.

Plantation Lodge is surrounded by coffee plantations and the famous green hills of Karatu located in the suburbs of Ngorongoro Crater. Inspired with charm and designed to provide comfort, Plantation Lodge is tucked away in the heart of the African bush.

Plantation Lodge, guests enjoy soothing views of the greenery; experience the walk underneath the avocado and eucalyptus trees and listen to the sounds of over 40 different birds. Get fascinated by the snuggling geckos doing their mating dance or the cackling geese on their way to the morning bath.

Plantation Lodge is half-way between the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and Lake Manyara National Park. Turning off the main road in Karatu, a bustling market town, the lodge is a ten-minute drive along a private, dusty road passing through coffee plantations and taking in great views over the surrounding farmland.

Most of the lodge's staff come from the local area – 50 of them live within the lodge grounds – and when we last visited we found the staff to be charming and helpful.

As its name suggests, Plantation Lodge is set in seven acres of land on a working farm and coffee plantation. The gardens are full of scents and colours – countless hibiscus, bougainvillea and blossoms attract an array of butterflies and birds. Offering shade are tall rubber, eucalyptus and banana trees. Lush, manicured lawns surround the sprawling, colonial-style farmhouse and its cottages.

Plantation Lodge's main house – where the lounge and dining rooms are – is fresh, light and airy. White walls act as the perfect backdrop for black and white photographs and African curios. Straw mats line the cool tiled floors and high, beamed ceilings ensure a bright and spacious feel to the lodge.

Ngorongoro Conservation Area
The Ngorongoro Conservation area borders the Serengeti in northern Tanzania and includes the world's largest crater which acts as a natural enclosure for almost every species of wildlife found in East Africa. This includes the very rare black rhino. The Ngorongoro Crater is where you'll witness some of the densest population of wildlife in the world and it's a truly amazing place for photographers. The Maasai still live within the conservation area, and it's also home to Olduvai where some of man's earliest remains have been found
