Lake Natron Tented Camp is one of
the few camps at Lake Natron, far from the tourist track
and in a fascinating setting on the slopes of Mountain
Oldonyo Lengai and the Lake Natron. It is the ideal
stopover for those who want to climb Oldonyo Lengai,
visit Lake Natron with its flamingoes and other lake
birds, and take the adventurous route to Serengeti
through Loliondo Game Controlled area to Lobo's Gate,
instead of the road at Ngorongoro Crater.
Accommodation.
Unique in its setting, Lake Natron Camp is set back in a
grove of trees slightly removed from the dusty terrain
of the lake. Reasonably priced, modern and clean safari
tents offer comfortable beds, en-suite showers and a
verandah with your own private view. A fully stocked bar
and restaurant with view over Lake Natron ensure you
have a cold drink and good food in the evening. And the
small swimming pool helps to cool off at the end of
dusty Safari day.
There is also a basic campsite in pleasant lawns under
shady acacias. Facilities include flush toilet and
showers.
Activities.
Climbing Oldonyo Lengai can be arranged with highly
experienced guides. No special equipment is required but
it is a hard climb to the top due to the steepness of
the mountain. You depart the camp around midnight, climb
in the early morning hours to reach the top for sunrise.
On the top at 2.890m you'll be rewarded with the
fantastic views of Lake Natron and the surrounding
landscape. Oldonyo Lengai is still active.
But there is also good (and easier...) walking around
the lake. For example you can visit nearby freshwater
waterfalls, where you can swim.
The lake is home to thousands of lesser flamingo's and
it is one of the most important flamingo breeding
grounds on earth.

Wildlife of Lake Natron
The area
around Lake Natron is home to some wildlife, you might
see the occasional giraffe or zebra – but this is not
the main reason to come here. In stead, visit this area
for its remoteness, scenery and for an interesting route
into the back of Loliondo.
That said, the lake itself is home to a fascinating
eco-system which thrives in this harsh environment. The
lake is full of millions of Cyan bacteria - a salt
loving micro organism which create their own food
through photosynthesis. As the lake increases in
salinity, so does the population of bacteria. The lake
also supports a vast population of Spirulina, a
blue-green algae with red pigments, on which the large
population of Lesser Flamingoes feed on.

Ngare
Sero Lake Natron Camp
Sitting on the unsheltered flats close to the lake, the tents here
are shaded by a thick man-made gauze netting, which is camouflaged
to blend perfectly into the landscape. The Camp has 8 guest tents
and one dining/common area tent “the Boma”.
Ngare Sero Camp is a rustic option, but the food and service are
good and the camp has a great atmosphere.
Many activities proposed by the Camp and arranged with one of the
Maasai guides
