About Lake Naivasha.
• Beautiful lakeside scenery
• Fishing
Lake Naivasha lies outside of the capital Nairobi and is a popular
weekend getaway for weary city dwellers. It was once part of a
bigger lake that included Lakes Elmenteita and Nakuru, but much of
this original body of water dried up, leaving Naivasha with a 150
km2 freshwater lake. Subsequently, Lake Naivasha has become known
for its cool climate, peaceful surrounds and tranquil waters – an
excellent holidaying spot. During the colonial era of the early 20th
century, the lakeshore was a popular location for parties.
Today,
the fertile soil around the lake is used for agriculture, in
particular for the production of fruit, flowers, vegetables and
vineyards, while the fish of the lake attract over 400 bird species.
Wild animals that can be seen frequenting the shore, are zebra,
antelope, giraffes, monkeys and hippopotami.
Nearby lies the scenic Hell’s Gate National Park, where walking is
allowed. The Njorowa Gorge is in this vicinity and the impressive,
red cliffs are an attraction in themselves. Don’t miss a visit to
the Crater Lake with stunning countryside, the chance to see black
and white colobus monkeys and excellent swimming opportunities.
Special features include:
• Elsamere
The former home of Joy Adamson, acclaimed conservationist and author
of the book Born Free, is on the shore of Lake Naivasha. Her home is
now a wildlife education and conservation centre
• Fish
The lake did not use to have much fish, with only one endemic
species recorded initially. Due to the introduction of fish species
such as Nile perch and black bass, however, fishing has become a
popular activity. The fish have also brought a host of birds to the
lake, with pelicans, cormorants, kingfishers and the African fish
eagle delighting birders
